As part of a campaign to pass legislation in Pennsylvania to further protect student journalists, we are asking you to help us gather information about your school publications.

Under current Pennsylvania code, school publications do have some protections of their speech, but we have found that many schools and their administrators may not follow this code.   In order to ensure student First Amendment rights, a nationwide campaign to pass legislation that protects student journalism, New Voices, has been created.

In Pennsylvania, our own New Voices campaign is underway.  We are hopeful that with your support we can pass legislation that not only protects student speech, but advisers’ jobs as well.

Students and advisers in the eastern and western regions of Pennsylvania have already begun conversations with state senators about supporting New Voices legislation. To further these discussions, we’d like to share data and anecdotes from schools throughout the state.

This survey may take 15-20 minutes to complete. We’re asking for a lot of information— both multiple choice questions and anecdotes. It’s as anonymous as you’d like it to be. On the last page of the survey, we ask whether we have your permission to use anecdotes from this survey as part of our New Voices advocacy— with or without your identifying information.

Thanks in advance for your support!
